Why I Built Unrect: Curiosity, Heavy Web Apps, and the Search for a Unified Canvas

Building a serious graphics editing platform inside a web browser used to be considered an impossible dream. For years, professional design work belonged exclusively to heavy desktop software. But as browser technologies matured, the web transformed into a powerful creative canvas.

When I started working on Unrect, people often asked me: “Why build another design tool when existing web platforms already exist?”

Here is the honest story behind why I built Unrect, what drove the project, and the creative curiosity that started it all.

1. Pure Developer Curiosity: Can Browsers Handle Heavy Design Apps?

It all started with a simple, persistent question: Can a web browser run a truly heavy and complex design application natively without slowing down?

As a developer, I’ve always been fascinated by what can be accomplished inside a browser tab. We see web applications handling rich interactive experiences and real-time collaboration, but running an interactive graphics workspace with vector path editing and instant canvas responses in real time is a unique challenge.

Sure, existing web tools have proved that browser-based creative applications work wonderfully. But for a developer, seeing someone else build something great never satisfies the itch to understand how to build it. You can’t just say, “Oh well, someone else already did it.” I wanted to push the boundaries, test browser capabilities firsthand, and see how far real-time interactive design could be taken.

2. Moving Beyond Template Limits: The Need for Advanced Editing

Template-driven web tools revolutionized design accessibility by making graphics creation fast for millions. They are fantastic for quick social media graphics, simple banners, and rapid layout customization.

However, as creators grow, many hit a frustrating ceiling:

  • You can’t easily manipulate individual Bezier curve anchor points.
  • You lack precise node controls for custom typography or brand logos.
  • You can’t apply flexible layer blending or fine-tuned visual adjustments.

For designers and creators who need advanced graphic controls, simple template tools quickly feel restrictive. Unrect was designed to bridge that gap — giving you high-precision vector editing and live creative controls directly in your browser tab, without needing expensive desktop subscriptions.

3. The Hybrid Canvas Experiment: Vectors and Bitmaps in One Place

Another core question that kept me up at night was: Can vector graphics and raster images truly be managed side-by-side in one unified workspace?

Traditionally, designers are forced to pick a side or constantly jump between separate applications:

  • Vector editors excel at sharp shapes, icons, and scalable layouts.
  • Raster editors excel at pixel painting, photo retouching, and image adjustments.

Having to switch back and forth breaks the creative flow. Unrect explores a Unified Hybrid Canvas model — where vector paths, image layers, text layouts, and live adjustment filters live in the exact same workspace. You can edit crisp Bezier curves on one layer and retouch image photos on another, without ever leaving your canvas.

4. Local-First & 100% Free for Creators

From day one, Unrect has been built around a local-first philosophy:

  • All design operations and project files (.unrect) run directly on your own device.
  • Your project files belong entirely to you — no lock-in, no forced cloud uploads, and no hidden subscription paywalls.

Unrect is currently 100% free for all creators. It represents a labor of love, an open experiment in browser performance, and a tool built for designers who want speed, precision, and creative freedom.

What’s Next for Unrect?

Unrect is still evolving rapidly. I’m continuing to refine vector path tools, expand creative filter controls, and optimize smooth canvas performance.
